GSW is a manufacturer of slitting lines
Your slitting line – engineered for efficiency, precision, and availability
GSW designs and manufactures high-performance slitting lines for industrial strip processing. Our systems enable highly precise strip production with maximum process stability and are engineered for demanding applications in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metals. With decades of project experience, we deliver turnkey slitting line solutions tailored precisely to your material specifications, tolerances, and production requirements.
Why choose a GSW slitting line?
Our slitting lines are specifically designed for operations where the multi-million investment required for fully automated systems is not economically viable, yet where consistent quality, precise slit widths, and high process reliability remain essential.
At GSW, you do not receive a standard machine, but a solution engineered precisely to your technical specifications – including material width, coil weight, strip thickness, and your individual production logic.
And because we consider this essential: we listen from the very beginning and design the system exactly the way you actually need it.
You also benefit from the following technical advantages:
-
High cutting accuracy – even with demanding materials
-
Short setup times thanks to modular machine assemblies
-
Energy-efficient drives combined with a robust mechanical design
-
Automated coil feeding available as an option
-
Intuitive and clearly structured operator interface, reducing training effort

What makes GSW unique as a manufacturer
-
At the core is the fact that we design and manufacture almost everything in-house.
-
Equally important is our expertise, which is driven by the strong identification and long-term commitment of our “GSW sheet metal fans” to the company.
-
We place a particular focus on simplicity – reflected in efficiency, operator-friendly design, and reliable operation.
-
More than 50 years of continuous experience, supported by stable leadership now in its second generation, complete what defines GSW as a manufacturer.
Examples of Implemented Slitting Lines
Our large-scale slitting line is installed in Germany at a renowned manufacturer of household products.
The line processes galvanized, pre-painted, and stainless steel in thicknesses from 0.4 to 2.0 mm at slitting speeds of up to 200 m/min. The coils have a maximum weight of 15 t and a maximum width of 1,600 mm.
The system is used for cross-plant material supply for downstream processing operations. Accordingly, it is designed for a total throughput capacity of more than 5,000 tonnes per month.
Special equipment: shear station and film scoring machine
Special challenge: retrofit installation on an existing foundation

This 1,000 mm wide slitting line operates at 100 m/min and processes coated coil materials that are subsequently used for the production of cylinder head gaskets.
In this project, we supplied a particularly cost-effective solution featuring a movable roller band brake and manual coil handling.
Another system slits electrical steel down to strip widths as narrow as 10 mm and rewinds the material into compact coils. The processed materials have widths of up to 1,100 mm and coil weights of up to 5 t.
Special feature: threading knives with a special coating
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Our Slitting Lines
What are the advantages of movable console knife systems compared to threading knives?
With movable console knives, the tools can remain permanently mounted on the shaft. When using threading knives, any change in the slitting pattern requires all knives to be removed from the shafts and reassembled. The resulting time savings are significant, especially with manual changeovers.
Although automatic threading knife systems reduce setup times, they require a substantially higher investment.
If all console knives remain on the shaft, what happens when fewer cuts are required than there are consoles installed?
We offer an extended shaft design that allows unused tools to be easily “parked” on the rear side of the shaft.
Are there any disadvantages to console knife systems?
For applications involving a large number of cuts, both costs and setup times increase. In addition, the minimum achievable slit width is limited; depending on shaft diameter, it is typically around 75–100 mm, except for the center cut.
Does GSW offer standard slitting lines, or are all systems custom-built?
Over the years, we have developed a range of components and machine modules that we repeatedly use. However, the operating concept, technical details, and especially the performance parameters are always engineered to meet the specific requirements of each customer. Standard applications, such as those commonly found in the sheet metal roofing trade, are generally not part of our portfolio.
What delivery times can be expected for a GSW slitting line?
Depending on the level of engineering effort and lead times, delivery for smaller slitting lines is typically around 8–10 months. Larger systems with increased design complexity may require up to 15 months.
Does GSW also refurbish used slitting lines, including machines from other manufacturers?
Our primary focus is on creating new value through new systems. Refurbishments are naturally easier with our own equipment; however, we have also successfully overhauled used lines and machines from other manufacturers for our customers.
What is the largest slitting shear GSW has built to date?
For a customer in Poland, we built a machine with 250 mm knife shafts capable of slitting high-strength steel material with thicknesses of up to 6 mm.
What current developments and innovations in slitting technology is GSW working on?
In the past year, we designed and delivered a high-performance recoiler mandrel to a customer in Sweden, focusing on absolute concentricity and gentle handling of extremely sensitive materials.
Currently, we are developing a special solution for ultra-low-burr slitting in combination with our console knife system and are supporting a customer in exploring concepts for processing thick strip materials with a minimal width-to-thickness ratio.
